The "Horror Movie" Prototype for Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario 3D World is finally on the Nintendo Switch, which is fabulous, but as the game, alongside Bowser’s Fury, makes its way onto the new platform, it’s hard not to think about the infamous prototype that Nintendo’s developers created while working on the game.
Somewhere in Nintendo’s vaults there exists a version of Super Mario 3D World in which Princess Peach, Mario, Toad, and Luigi all crawl around on all fours and climb up walls, all with their ordinary character models.
This version of the game is so disturbing to view that longtime Mario producer (and Nintendo Switch poster boy) Yoshiaki Koizumi described is as looking “like a horror movie”, claiming that he couldn’t even bear to look at Princess Peach while she was in this form.
Of course, this version of the game was quickly iterated upon. Before long, this weird power-up turned into the Cat Bell that has become a familiar sight in both 3D World and Bowser’s Fury.
Even so, it’s fun to think of just how weird the game was before Cat Mario, Cat Peach, Cat Toad, and Cat Luigi were created.
It also makes us wonder…what did Bowser look like in this game?
Probably the same.
